Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 1-2 75% 25%
Days 3-4 50% 50%
Days 5-6 25% 75%

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

    Did the trick!

By Allayloo on Nov 13, 2021

Our cat was urinating outside the litterbox. The vet tested a sample of his urine and found it had crystals in it that were likely irritating him or causing discomfort. He prescribed a diet of this food, although he recommended the cans of it because of the higher water content which would help flush out the crystals. Since the cans were so much more expensive, we compromised and give him canned food for two small meals per day and dry food for the other four small meals We can't leave food out for our cats or they inhale it all in one sitting. We also bought a pet fountain to encourage him to drink more water. It worked; he stopped going outside the litter box! We give our cat his food first Our cat was urinating outside the litterbox. It helps that he's the only male. … more

I received my order in a very timely manner and am grateful for the service Chewy always offers. I'm fairly disabled and cannot drive to get Jordie Bear's needs, but I can always depend on Chewy to take care of them. #1 in my cat's opinion

By Mary on Nov 30, 2021

My cat has been on this Rx food for 2 years. After his surgery, we tried multiple bags of dry food and this one is the only one he eats and likes. The morsel size is perfect for him and apparently the taste is, too.

    Sent a ripped/repaired food bag

By Gena on Oct 24, 2021

I've began using Chewy throughout the passed 12 months. My experience has been positive, although my last order came with a ripped & repaired prescription food bag. Considering the cost of this prescription cat food, I would expect a online business would not choose to send a ripped/repaired food bag.

    Stressed kitty

By Beysmama on Nov 13, 2021

My kitkat has idiopathic cystitis linked to stress. She's been eating Hill's Urinary Care for about a year and has done well. She likes the taste; the caveat being she's my little piggy kitty and will eat anything.

    Took too long to receive

By CatFood on Oct 1, 2021

I have this on autoship and usually get my shipments within 1-3 days. However, my last shipment took 8 days to receive. I was already really low on food. If you need food for your cats right away, don't depend on the shipping time frame. The reliability of shipments from Chewy within their proposed time frame has gown downhill lately. Do yourself a favor and pick up at the dog store.

    dry VS> wet c/d

    By 2fussycats on Oct 1, 2021

ok, my cats prefer the dry Hills c/d rather than wet... and it seems to help -- so far...no urine puddles outside the litter box... it was a toss up between k/d and c/d --- with large kidneys vet recommended k/d but the cats had bladder issues... my younger cat likes to copy older one.. so both were doing puddles... both eating dry at night...

    Good food for urinary issues

By Elwin on Nov 9, 2021

This is the only food I've been feeding my cat since I got her from the shelter several years ago. This food, along with wet c/d food, seems to keep her issues in check, and she likes the food!

Changeover to this food was easy.

By Ginny on Sep 30, 2021

I had previously fed my cat Hills Science Diet Hairball Control dry food for adult cats 7+. The vet wants her to eat this Urinary Care c/d food now. The changeover to this food was easy. She eats it with no problem. However, she doesn't like the Hills Science Diet Urinary Care c/d wet food.
